Continuing Edge Workshops
BIM Primer for Horizontal Construction
March 7, 2024
1 – 5PM ET | 10AM – 2PM PT
Registration Fee: $400
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has had an incredible impact on the Design and Construction industries, with a big focus for the “vertical” market. How though, is it impacting the horizontal (infrastructure) market?
This workshop is intended to answer that question, aimed at those of you who are new to the concept of Information Modeling as it applies to non-building projects like: infrastructure for dams, waste facilities, rail, transit, aviation, energy, roads, highways, bridges, public parks and recreation, water, and wastewater. You will learn the terminology for holding your own in conversations about Information Modeling on jobs, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of what Information Modeling for Infrastructure is and how you might begin to use it.
Come to this session prepared to interact – it is not a lecture format, instead we will have frank discussions about the overall process and take a deeper dive into the specifics about what this dynamic technological process means to you.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, attendees will:
- Gain an understanding of what BIM/CIM/VDC is and how it applies to horizontal construction and infrastructure projects.
- Be ready to take on BIM/CIM/VDC with deeper insight of its impacts on the AECO industry.
- Want to learn more about the BIM/CIM/VDC process and how it might apply to their specific organization(s).
- Have the ability to create an action plan for getting started with BIM/CIM/VDC on their projects.
- Understand the benefits of BIM/CIM/VDC for Infrastructure
Blueprint Reading
April 29 & 30, May 6 & 7, 2024
3 – 6 PM ET | 12 – 3 PM PT
Registration Fee: $600
Join this 4-part series, designed to provide you with the foundational knowledge and ‘hands on’ classroom experience, to help get you started in understanding construction design documents.
This blueprint reading series is developed to instruct each student in the basic understanding of construction blueprints & specifications. Every construction professional, whether working in the field or in the office, must know how to read plans. Although not overly complicated, beginning to read blueprints does require a basic understanding, practice and general knowledge of industry standards used to communicate project design.
What you can expect to gain from this course:
- An introductory & foundational knowledge of blueprint reading as it relates to building construction projects.
- Hands on practice and understanding of reading blueprints and specifications manuals.
- Be able to locate both general & specific trade information using blueprints & Specifications.
- Be able to answer basic construction questions related to design intent, project layout and the installation of materials at the jobsite.
- Be able to locate, identify & understand project specific aspects within the design documents.
Problem Solving Workshop - Tools for Teams
May 31 & June 7, 2024
11:30 AM – 2:30 PM ET | 8:30 – 11:30 AM PT
Registration Fee: $500
Ask the 5 Whys. Join your facilitators, Andy, Kyle and Dan, as they add new problem-solving tools to your toolbox. Students will work together in small groups to improve actual student-submitted project issues, risks, and opportunities. To help us with things like:
- Make sure we are solving the right problem.
- To get buy-in to our counter measures.
- Clearly define who is taking responsibility for which pieces.
- Solve the Root Cause, not the symptom.
Schedule and Tools Explored:
Day 1:
- 5 Why Method
- Fast-Track Problem Solving (3 Powerful Questions leading to team analysis and specific actions).
- Root Cause Analysis (For Complex Problems with multiple causes – a deeper dive using Fishbone Diagram).
- This will begin toward the end of Day 1 and be carried over to the beginning of Day 2 as a bridge from Fast-Track to A3, thus forming a solid foundation for learning A3 Problem Solving (a diagram of the Fishbone analysis is often pasted into the A3 analysis section).
Day 2:
- A3 Process & A3 Thinking
By the end of this Workshop, the student will be able to…
- Draft a clear problem statement.
- Determine which Problem-Solving method is best in each potential problem.
- Differentiate between a symptom of a problem and the root cause of that, to assure the problem does not occur again.
- Utilize each of the 4 methods presented.
- Participate in, and possibly lead a team in these 4 methods, as learned through hands-on coached problem solving during the Workshop.
- Name the four principal, problem-solving methods and describe how to implement them.
Lean Into Safety
July 11, 2024
